MITM Americas & Cultourfair: Bestowment of "La Carta de Juan de la Cosa" to the Minister of Tourism

During the inauguration of Destino Capital - MITM Americas & CULTOURFAIR 2017 - November 14/17 in Santo Domingo – his Excellency Mr. Francisco Javier García, Minister of Tourism of Dominican Republic will receive an original reproduction of the “Carta de Juan de la Cosa” for his notable contribution in the amalgamation of Iberoamerican countries in the tourism sector.

Juan de la Cosa, Spanish sailor and cartographer that accompanied Columbus on his two first voyages and was the owner of the caravel Santa Maria, it was him who drew up the letter in the port of Santa María (Cádiz) on 1500, at the end of his voyage.

The original letter is located in the Naval Armada Museum of Madrid. It’s the most important cartographic document of the time, in which the American continent is represented for the first time in history. It holds 212º of the equator´s circumference, its 1.85 meters long by 0.92 wide and it was drawn to be presented to the Catholic Monarchs, that the New World that had been discovered.

The map shows the line of demarcation at 46°37’ West – the meridian 370 Spanish leagues westerly of the Cape Verde Islands as decreed in the Tordesillas Treaty dated 7h of June 1494 in a papal bull issued by Pope Alejandro VI. Territories to the east of this line of demarcations were given to the Portugal, those to the west to Spain.

The compass Rose is decorated with a representation of the Virgin Mary holding baby Jesus.

Chile organized their first national forum dedicated to MICE tourism in Santiago

The first national forum dedicated to MICE tourism in Santiago was organized by the Undersecretary for Tourism and the National Tourism Board, Sernatur with the objective of presenting the economic importance of the segment, how it works and the opportunities for its development. Amongst the international speakers was Santiago Gonzalez, ICCA Regional Director for Latin America and the Caribbean, who in addition to presenting the topic “International Meetings, Innovation, Development, Technology and Sustainability” in the forum, also lead a special workshop with current and potential ICCA members to demonstrate how to get the most from the ICCA data platform.

From this year until 2019 Chile will host the most important MICE focused regional Trade Show, Fiexpo. This Show is a very important showcase for the promotion of MICE and it is expected that the impact of its realization will be reflected in the following years.

With an improving infrastructure, gourmet food and a growing reputation for events, the Chilean capital is quickly becoming South America’s business hub. The Chilean capital has captured the spotlight thanks to its beautiful landscapes, broad range of tourist-friendly activities and fantastic business centers. In 2016, Santiago even ranked above such regional icons as Buenos Aires and Rio de Janeiro.

But this is no coincidence: Chile has built a reputation for its stable and relaxing atmosphere, and has been recognized by the National Brand Index and Global Peace Index for the security and quality of life on offer throughout the country.

China, Floating Boardwalk Opens in Guizhou Province

A butterfly-shaped boardwalk whose path extends more than 13 acres has been opened during the National Day Golden Week holiday on the Hongshui River in Luodian County, in southwest China’s Guizhou Province. Tens of thousands of colorful lamps light the footpath for night use, when a light show is also a tourist draw. For daytime use there are five floating swimming pools and some 200 inflatable pool toys distributed among these. The pools will be usable and a reason to visit even in winter, as temperatures in Luodian County average higher than most elsewhere in the province.

Germany, Hamburg: Increasing value of meetings, incentive and events sector

3 million overnight stays in 2016, worth more than 706 million Euro

The number of conference and convention delegates visiting Hamburg continues to grow. According to the Conference and Convention Market Survey, commissioned by the Hamburg Convention Bureau, the number of overnight stays attributable to meetings, incentives, conferences and events increased from 2.3 million in 2013 to 3 million in 2016, worth more than 706 million euro.

Since the Hamburg Convention Bureau launched its first Conference and Convention Market Survey in 2014, the share of MICE-driven overnight stays in Hamburg has increased by 700,000. In 2013, the city welcomed 2.3 million conference and convention delegates, rising to just over 3 million in 2016.

The share of total nights spent in Hamburg hotels increased from 21 percent in 2013 to 25 percent in 2016. Florian Gerdes, Marketing Manager Conventions at Hamburg Convention Bureau, explains: “The results of the survey confirm that meetings and events play an increasingly important role in the prosperity of Hamburg. The MICE market not only brings monetary value to the city, it also significantly contributes to further developing the city’s key economic sectors, including medicine, media, logistics and transport.”

Last year, the number of business events increased from 57,000 to 64,000 compared with the same period in 2015. 1.8 million event delegates visited the city - of these, 19% came from abroad, a 3 percent increase from 2015.

The top industries to hold events in Hamburg include financial services, chemicals and pharmaceuticals, medicine and medical technology, logistics and transport as well as media and publishing.

Hamburg Convention Bureau will showcase some of the city’s landmark meeting and event venues at ibtm taking place 28 – 30 November 2017.

Using VR headsets, planners can preview the new CCH – Congress Center Hamburg, set to be one of Europe's largest congress centres when it re-opens next year. They can also meet with representatives from the 25hours hotel company who’s offers innovative accommodation and meeting offering reflects the city’s maritime heritage including meeting space in a former shipping container.

Both venues will join Hamburg Convention Bureau on stand number F50 (with the German Convention Bureau).

Italy, Bologna – New 1,800-seat Europauditorium plenary hall inaugurated in Bologna

The new Europauditorium was inaugurated on 20th of September, the restructuring has, moreover, increased the number of seats from 1,340 to 1,800, improved acoustics and optimized lighting.

The historic plenary hall of Bologna Congress Center, has become one of the top five largest halls in Italy; the renovation is part of a broader development plan for both market: congresses and exhibitions industry.

"It was decided to start with the building renovation of the Congress centre to respond effectively to market requirements that for years has identified Bologna as a potential destination of more congresses than those actually hosted, but which could not be accommodated due to the lack of adequate spaces", explains the Director of Bologna Congressi (the venue-managing company) Mr. Donato Loria.

The overall project, to which BolognaFiere will dedicate an important economic investment, plans to renovate the entire fairground; the works will start on pavilions 29 and 30, continuing with the construction of new ones, which will help to strengthen the positioning of BolognaFiere at an international level and to expand the facilities available also for the congresses capable to easily hold events of more than 5,000 delegates.

"From an economic point of view," Loria points out, "this intervention is a first step in the more concrete involvement of the BolognaFiere group in the meeting industry segment."

Malta: Conventions Malta launches two Support Schemes

Conventions Malta has launched two new support schemes aimed at assisting and attracting more association conferences to the Maltese Islands. Both schemes will apply to events taking place between 2018 and 2020.

The Local Associations Scheme supports local entities looking to host international conferences and meetings in Malta. The Scheme covers monetary support of up to €6,500, flights for decision makers visiting the Maltese Islands on a site inspection prior to choosing the destination, and other forms of assistance such as gifts and resources to be used during the bidding process.

The International Associations Scheme is targeted towards those international associations which do not have a representation in Malta and are considering bringing their meeting to the Islands. This scheme offers a subvention of €25 per international participant up to a maximum of €12,500 per event, apart from flights for site inspection trips. The same non-monetary support of gifts and resources is also offered in this scheme.

Applicant organizations need to meet specific eligibility criteria. Events must take place over a minimum of three nights and organizations must submit their applications before the destination is chosen. Applications need to reach Conventions Malta by no later than 6 months prior to the start of the event. Thailand - New Experience Mekong Collection Showcases The Best In Responsible Tourism

With the purpose of showcasing responsible and sustainable travel experiences in the Greater Mekong Subregion (GMS), the "Experience Mekong Collection"- see http://www.mekongtourism.org/experience-collection/ - was launched at the ITB Asia 2017 in Singapore. As the name suggests, it is a collection of inspirational, rewarding and authentic experiences that minimise negative impacts and generate greater benefits for the people of the GMS and enhance the well-being of host communities.

Commenting on the launch, Mekong Tourism Coordinating Office (MTCO) Executive Director Jens Thraenhart said: "The importance of responsible tourism cannot be underestimated, and the "Experience Mekong Collection" is a wonderful way of highlighting examples of good practice and at the same time providing benchmarks for further improving the experiences on offer in the GMS. We hope to motivate other operators to become involved and do their part for responsible tourism."

As examples of the experiences on offer in the "Experience Mekong Collection", Soksabike in Battambang, Cambodia runs bike tours that give an insight into the lives of local people in the Battambang countryside and sees visitors spend time in local homes; Myanmar Outfitters in Lashio, Myanmar offers mountain biking, hiking, overnight village stays and other activities which positively impact the local economy; White Elephant Adventures in Luang Prabang, Laos specialises in trekking, kayaking and mountain biking into the mountainous jungles to stay with Hmong, Khmu and Lao Loum hilltribe communities; while Lisu Lodge in Chiang Mai, Thailand is run by Lisu hilltribe villagers who take care of guests during their stay and on various activities in the surrounding countryside.

Then there's Horsepen 46 in Yunnan, China which is a youth-hostel style guesthouse in the ancient town of Shaxi owned and operated by backpackers and designed for the young and adventurous; Pleasant View Resort in Ngapali Beach, Myanmar offering a splendid location nestled between the 'Rakhine Yoma' Hills and the Bay of Bengal; and Artisans Angkor in Siem Reap, Cambodia for a fascinating insight into the production of silk as it has been done for hundreds of years.

The "Experience Mekong Collection" is ever-growing and welcomes nominations from people of responsible travel experiences which they feel should be included in the collection. Nominations and applications, as well as listings, in the collection are free. MTCO expects to feature at least four experiences per country each year (see here).

Endorsement of nominations is the role of the Mekong Tourism Advisory Group (MeTAG), made up of tourism professionals who are active in responsible tourism in the GMS. All endorsed travel experiences are also eligible for the annual "Experience Mekong Showcase" that features innovative experiences throughout the region.

IMEX America brings a positive outlook and more business opportunities than ever

As 12,000+ exhibitors, hosted buyers and attendees at this year’s IMEX America said “Farewell,” IMEX Group Chairman Ray Bloom reflected upon the achievements of the show and a positive, unifying week for the meetings industry.

Over 3,200 hosted buyers and an additional 2,500 plus attendees came to Las Vegas, and Tuesday and Wednesday were the busiest days ever at IMEX America.

With more than 3,300 exhibitors representing 150 countries and a major expansion of the Inspiration Hub, the show’s education area, the seventh IMEX America was the largest ever.

A significant factor in this growth was that 58 booths - 20 per cent of returning exhibitors - had booked larger spaces and the show welcomed 64 new booths.

An RFP gives a strong business focus to appointments at the show. The fact that 72 per cent of appointments were based on RFPs, an increase by 4 per cent, is a powerful measure of how buyers are ready to discuss real business prospects at IMEX America.

As more than 70,000 appointments were made including 60,000 individual appointments and booth presentations, Ray Bloom said, “For exhibitors and buyers this simply means that we’ve created more opportunities than ever to do business.”

“We’re really happy with the quality of the IMEX buyers and we’ve gotten very strong prospects for short and long-term business,” said Darren K. Green, Senior Vice President, Sales for the Los Angeles Tourism & Convention Board.

Ray Bloom also drew attention to an important milestone; the 150th IMEX-MPI-MCI Future Leaders Forum took place at the show. “We’ve always been committed to actively encouraging students from around the world to make careers in the meeting and incentive travel industry. Over the years more than 7,500 young people have taken part in this program and many have since gone on to positions in the industry. It’s very pleasing to see how far they’ve progressed.”

Discussing the show’s extensive education program, Ray Bloom highlighted the new Event Design Certificate course and the Association Leadership Forum, created by ASAE, a new special education program which had brought together 85 association CEOs and executives on Monday. He also said that the Executive Meeting Forum for meetings strategists working in the corporate sector had attracted 30 senior executives from companies including BP, Allianz AG, McDonald’s, PwC and Toyota with an annual buying power in excess of $2.5bn.

The program started with Smart Monday, powered by MPI, which brought over 1,000 event professionals to engage in a wide variety of learning events. At the first MPI keynote Janet Sperstad provided fascinating insights when presenting key findings newly published in a white paper about the IMEX Group’s Talking Point for this year, Purposeful Meetings. This is now available to download.

During the week, 250 education sessions took place, covering ten education tracks, and attracted several hundred participants. 80% of the sessions were assigned with CEs for CMP certification. Adding to the overall show experience was the new Inspiration Hub which used inflatable domes for the seminars, campfires and white space areas for the first time.

The "power of live experience" was a theme that came to life at the Lunchtime Live Zone, interactive live event experiences including instant personalized song writing, the first Virtual Reality Photo Booth and "Sand Selfies”.

The new CSR & Sustainability initiatives this year by IMEX America included using recyclable carpet in the aisles and in some of the booths and not printing a Show Catalog. The show was also supporting "Spread the Word Nevada" by encouraging participants to donate books to a local literacy scheme. For those taking particular care of their health there was the #IMEXrun which this year attracted over 450 runners.

IMEX America is widely known for its networking opportunities. More than 6,000 peer-to peer introductions were made in advance of the show via the Zenvoy connections software, while a wide range of social activities such as SITE Nite North America, the EIC Hall of Leaders Reception, Shamrock Shootout Golf Classic and MPI Foundation Rendezvous, the IMEX America Night brought thousands of people together.

Ray Bloom added, “It’s not just the associations with their major events. Many exhibitors have also been investing in creating major hospitality events, taking over restaurants and bars across the city. It all adds to the overall value and experience for both buyers and suppliers.

“I’d like to thank all our industry partners for their continuing support and to congratulate them on the many fantastic networking events that they have arranged to take place here at IMEX America. The worldwide industry has been in Las Vegas this week and I look forward to seeing everyone next year.”

Looking to the future, the IMEX Group announced that it has formed a partnership with Skift with its new Skift Cities platform that will examine how mid-sized cities are leveraging their innovation economies to reposition themselves in the meetings industry as catalysts and collision spaces for new ideas. This will result in the publication of a trends report in 2018.

Ray Bloom concluded, saying, “This has been a week when the positive outlook of everyone has ensured that doing business, planning meetings and events continues to be a powerful way to regenerate and drive economies forward.”

New and Emerging Markets Set to Showcase at ibtm world 2017

With just under a month to go before the start of ibtm world 2017, robust exhibitor sales from several new and emerging MICE markets have been announced. This year, destination management companies, hotel groups, conference venues, national tourist organisations and airlines, including first time stand holders from Iran, Africa, Kazakhstan, Russia, Edinburgh and Japan, will be at the show, which takes place from 28 – 30 November at Fira Gran Via Barcelona, Spain.

This year, ibtm world will welcome its first ever exhibitor from Iran. Iran Doostan Tours established its MICE department in 1990 and specialises in planning and organising MICE events as well as arranging post-meeting tours.

Saeed Azam, Marketing Manager, Iran Doostan Tours, says: “Since 2015 when sanctions were lifted in Iran, business owners have been interested in investing in the country. Iran Doostan Tours has had positive experiences in Spain over the past few years and as Spain is one of the strong European economies, we believe that attending ibtm world 2017 can be our launchpad to the European and South American markets.”

As well as new exhibitors attending the event for the first time, there are clear signs of growth in several markets, for example Africa. Botswana Tourism, Uganda Tourist Board and Tanzania Tourist Board are all taking stands this year; North Africa’s largest and newest conference centre, CIC Alger, which opened in 2016 in Algiers, will exhibit for the first time this year, as will Zantours, the largest destination management company for Zanzibar. This is in addition to other returning African destinations such as South Africa Tourism, Rwanda Convention Bureau, Kenya Tourism Board, Moroccan National Tourist Office and Egypt Tourist Authority.

As well as a strong field of brand new exhibitors, this year several organisations have taken their own stand for the first time, having previously been exhibiting partners, including the Royal College of Surgeons in Edinburgh and Gyeonggi Tourism Organisation from Korea. Kyoto Convention and Visitors Bureau, which has been a partner on the Japan stand for many years, has this year taken its own stand, supported by five local partners.

Matthew Stevens Conventions and Conferences Specialist at Kyoto Convention and Visitors Bureau, says: “This is our third year at ibtm world. In the past two years we have brought some very high-quality events into Kyoto through ibtm world, so we are very excited to debut our own Kyoto stand this year.

“Our local MICE suppliers have enthusiastically expressed interest in joining us at overseas tradeshows, so it was natural for us to bring everyone with us and exhibit together as ‘Team Kyoto’. By having our team together at ibtm world, we can offer meeting planners a faster service and a chance to meet suppliers face-to-face. Furthermore, we hope this Kyoto stand will help us further strengthen our brand as a world class meetings and events destination.”
